Conclusion

Patients with haemodynamic cerebral ischaemia (measured on PET scanning) and a recently symptomatic acute carotid artery occlusion were included. The trial was terminated early for futility after 195 patients had been randomized: two year stroke and death rates were 21 per cent after surgery and 23 per cent in controls.
