Conclusion

In the RCTs studied, as well as reducing length of stay (standard mean difference -0.83, 95 per cent confidence interval -0.92 to -0.75, P<0.0001), enhanced recovery also reduced the rate of surgical site infection: 0.75, 0.58 to 0.98, P=0.04.
