Conclusion

Bile duct clearance rates were similar (92 per cent duct exploration, 97 per cent sphincterotomy) in this study that included 226 patients. Both procedures were equally safe, but retained stones were more common after duct exploration and pancreatitis more common after sphincterotomy.
