Conclusion

Some 199 patients were included and followed for a median 59 months. Severe complications and mortality were similar. Patients in the lavage group were less likely to need a stoma (8 versus 33 per cent, P=0.002), but more likely to get recurrent diverticulitis (21 versus 4 per cent, P=0.004).
