Conclusion

The operation done through a small minilaparotomy with retroperitoneal exposure was compared with a conventional transperitoneal technique in 300 patients. Mortality was 2.7 per cent in each group. The mini-incision improved postoperative pulmonary function and reduced the duration of hospital stay (3.1 versus 9.3 days, p<0.01).
