Conclusion

The addition of oral antibiotics to standard parenteral antibiotic prophylaxis reduced the rate of surgical site infection from 12.8 to 7.3 per cent in this study that included 579 patients: odds ratio 0.54, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.305 to 0.94, P=0.028.
