Conclusion

Overall survival rates were similar in this study that included 132 patients. Shunt failure occurred later after surgical shunting than TIPS (45 versus 22 months, P=0.04). Survival was longer after surgery in patients with Child’s A (91 versus 19 months, P=0.009) or Child’s B liver disease (63 versus 21 months, P=0.04).
