Conclusion

This report concerns two consecutive trials looking at bleeding gastric varices. Permanent control of bleeding was achieved in 97-100 per cent of those who had portacaval shunting versus 27-29 per cent who had endoscopic therapy and only 6 per cent who had transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting.
