Conclusion

Haemodilution resulted in a greater need for intra-operative fluid resuscitation (6250 vs. 3900ml, P<0.001) without reducing the requirement for blood transfusion in this study of 130 procedures. There was a trend towards a higher rate of pancreatic duct anastomotic complications in the treatment group: 32 vs. 23.1 per cent, P=0.17.
