Conclusion

This trial was suspended after 101 patients had been randomized. Although there was no difference between the groups in standard clinical outcomes, vocal cord motility postoperatively was defective in 31 per cent after retrojugular, compared with six percent after standard dissection (P=0.0014). This difference had gone after six months: 2.4 per cent vs. none.
