Conclusion

Overall in this study that included 2502 patients, rates of early death, myocardial infarction or stroke were similar after surgery (4.5 per cent) or stenting (5.2 per cent). However, in patients whose carotid disease was symptomatic, early stroke and death rates were significantly lower after surgery: 3.2 versus 6.0 per cent, P=0.02.
