Conclusion

Almost 5000 procedures were included in this analysis of ten randomized trials. The risk of stroke and death at the time of the procedure was lower after surgery (odds ratio 0.67, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.47 to 0.95, P=0.025), mainly due to the reduction in stroke (0.65, 0.43 to 1.0; P=0.049). Results in the intermediate term were similar.
