Conclusion

In this trial that included 185 patients scheduled for coronary bypass, there was one perioperative death in each group. Up to 90 days, there were no strokes in patients who had prior or synchronous carotid endarterectomy (CEA), but there were seven strokes in patients randomized to CEA after coronary bypass (P=0.02).
