Conclusion

Thirteen trials containing nearly 3000 procedures were analysed. Patching reduced the rate of perioperative stroke (P=0.004), the risk of carotid occlusion (P=0.0001) and the rate of recurrent stenosis (P<0.0001). Seven trials showed no effect from patch type, but one reported worse results for polytetrafluoroethylene compared with Dacron patches.
