Conclusion

This study included 2589 patients with acute venous thromboembolism. The rate of recurrent DVT during six months of subsequent anticoagulation was 2.3 per cent with dabigatran and 2.2 per cent with warfarin.  Major bleeding rates were similar (1.2 versus 1.7 per cent respectively), but any bleeding complication was more common on warfarin: hazard ratio 0.67, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.56 to 0.81.
