Conclusion

Twelve general surgery training programmes (443 residents) were included. Only 18 per cent of residents completed the electronic package, compared to 96 per cent who attended the moderated Journal Clubs. Trainees in the latter group scored higher in a validated test of expertise in critical appraisal: mean score 42.1 vs. 37.4, P=0.05.
