Conclusion

There was an advantage for the strategy of unilateral total and contralateral subtotal thyroidectomy in this trial that included 340 procedures. The rate of recurrent thyrotoxicosis was lower (3 vs. 15 patients, p=0.003) but with equivalent risk of hypothyroidism (46 vs. 35 patients, respectively, p=0.18).
