Conclusion

No permanent complications occurred in this trial that included 90 patients evaluable at a mean of 55 months. Reoperation was needed less often after the Dunhill procedure (unilateral total lobectomy with contralateral subtotal lobectomy): 2 vs. 9per cent (P=0.02), but most reoperations were for unexpected malignancy. Thirty per cent of unilateral procedures needed long term thyroxine.
