Conclusion

Seventy –one patients who had emergency sigmoid colectomy were randomly allocated seprafilm or control groups. Case notes were reviewed at least ten years after randomization: 42 patients could be evaluated. There were two admissions for bowel obstruction in controls, and none in the seprafilm group. The incidence of chronic abdominal pain was lower after seprafilm: 35 vs. 78 per cent, P=0.018.
