Conclusion

Some 205 patients were randomly allocated three doses of trimethoprim at the time of catheter removal. Treatment significantly reduced the rate of subsequent urinary infection 3 days later from 21.6 to 4.9 per cent, P<0.001. Relative risk reduction was 77.5 per cent and the number needed to treat was six.
