Conclusion

Some 182 patients were randomized. One year primary patencies in the autogenous and prosthetic groups were 33 and 44 per cent, respectively, P=0.03. Secondary patency rates were 52 and 79 per cent, P=0.0001, but prosthetic grafts needed more interventions to maintain fistula patency: 0.94 vs. 0.5 per year, P=0.077.
