Conclusion

Patients were included if they had an anastomosis accessible to colonoscopy and all received 3 months of metronidazole postoperatively. Some 174 patients were randomly assigned colonoscopic or standard follow-up, with stepped-up care for local recurrence. After 18 months, endoscopic recurrence occurred in 49 per cent of patients having active care versus 67 per cent having standard care (P=0.03).
