Conclusion

Some 211 patients undergoing open colorectal surgery were randomly allocated to standard care or a bundle of five procedures previously proven to reduce infection (no bowel preparation, warming, oxygen, fluid restriction, wound protector). The surgical site infection rate was lower in the control group: 24 vs. 45 per cent, P=0.003.
