Conclusion

Some 150 patients were included and followed for at least five years. Contralateral goitre developed in 1.4 per cent of treated patients compared to 16.7 per cent of controls. Contralateral thyroid lobectomy was needed in 1.4 and 8.3 per cent of these patients, respectively (P=0.05). Most of the recurrence was among patients with iodine deficiency.
