Conclusion

The study included 15 randomized trials of 6979 patients. The use of an antibiotic-impregnated implant reduced the rate of surgical site infection: odds ratio 0.51, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.33 to 0.77, P=0.001; number needed to treat = 21. The results were similar in clean, and clean-contaminated surgery.
