Conclusion

A total of 209 patients were resuscitated either with Ringer’s lactate or hypertonic saline. The trial was stopped for futility after the second interim analysis; there was no difference in the rate of adult respiratory distress syndrome-free survival between the groups: hazard ratio 1.01, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.63 to 1.6.
