Conclusion

This trial that enrolled 1431 patients concluded that mechanical bowel preparation could safely be abandoned. It had no effect on mortality or on anastomotic leakage (4.8 per cent after preparation vs. 5.4 per cent in controls), although it did reduce the rate of abscess formation in those who did develop a leak: 0.3 vs. 2.5 per cent, P=0.001.
