Meta-analysis of the effectiveness of surgical scalpel or diathermy in making abdominal skin incisions. Ann Surg 2011; 253: 8–13.

Conclusion

Eleven clinical trials were included in the analysis. Use of a surgical scalpel was quicker, and reduced incision-related blood loss. It also reduced incisional pain in the first 24h (P=0.031), without increasing the risk of wound infection (P=0.15).
