Conclusion

Of 810 patients recruited originally, 357 were randomized. After five years, the rate of fundoplication in the surgery group was 63 per cent compared to 13 per cent in the medical group. Differences in the REFLUX symptom score significantly favoured those who had surgery (P<0.001).
