Conclusion

Some 843 patients were initially treated out of hospital with one of three fluid regimens: normal saline, hypertonic saline or hypertonic saline with dextran. The trial was stopped early due to futility (23 per cent of proposed sample size); there was no difference between the groups in 28-day survival: 74.4, 73.0 and 74.5 per cent, respectively.
