Conclusion

Some 143 patients had PTH level measured one day after surgery. If PTH >10pg/ml, expectant treatment was adequate. Patients with PTH <10pg/ml were randomized to one of two treatments or a control group. Half of this group required treatment for hypocalcaemia, but the number of patients was too small to assess whether calcium alone, or with calcitriol was better.
