Conclusion

Some 165 patients were followed for a mean of 26 months. Hernia recurrence was lower with synthetic mesh (21.9 versus 39.7 per cent (P=0.035), even in the subgroup with a contaminated wound (5.9 versus 50 per cent, P=0.041).
