Conclusion

A total of 917 positive carriers were randomly allocated to a control group, or treatment with mupirocin and chlorhexidine. The rate of S. aureus postoperative infection was 3.4 per cent in the treatment and 7.7 per cent in the control groups: relative risk 0.42, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.23 to 0.75.
