Conclusion

Seventy-one trials including 7539 procedures were studied, mostly in orthopaedic surgery. Topical tranexamic acid reduced total blood loss (mean -319.55ml, P<0.001), reduced the need for blood transfusion (odds ratio 0.3, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.26 to 0.34), shortened hospital stay (mean -0.28 days, P=0.006), and did not increase adverse events.
