Conclusion

A consecutive series of 417 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy with routine calcium supplementation (500mg tds) were randomized to one of three calcitriol regimens. 1mcg calcitriol twice daily gave the lowest rate of severe hypocalcaemia after three days (9.9 per cent), compared to 23.1 per cent for 0.5 mcg and 27.1 per cent in controls.
