Conclusion

Four randomized trials with a total of 900 patients were studied. Antibiotic treatment was associated with a reduced rate of complications: relative risk 0.69, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.54 to 0.89, P=0.004. Efficacy of treatment and duration of hospital stay were similar in the two groups.
