Conclusion

There were three randomized trials that included 1177 patients with first proximal deep vein thrombosis. Post thrombotic syndrome developed in 49 to 70 per cent of control patients, compared with none to 39 per cent of those wearing stockings. Heterogeneity between trials was too great to consider meta-analysis, and conclusions were guarded.
