Conclusion

Sixty patients unable or reluctant to have an epidural were included; half were allocated intravenous lidocaine for the duration of the surgery and for four hours afterwards. Daily postoperative pain scores were similar, but bowel function returned more quickly in the lidocaine group, that shortened hospital stay by one day.
