Conclusion

Eighteen patients (4.2 per cent) already had a DVT preoperatively. The remaining 376 patients were randomized to additional preoperative thromboprophylaxis. Repeat scanning after 30 days showed no difference in the DVT rate: 1.6 per cent for preoperative, and 3.6 per cent for postoperative thromboprophylaxis only (P=0.34).
