Use of antibiotics alone for treatment of uncomplicated acute appendicitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Surgery 2011; 150: 673–683.

Conclusion

There were six reports including 1201 patients. In the antibiotic group, 6.9 per cent needed acute appendicectomy, and appendicitis subsequently recurred in 14.2 per cent. In the surgery group, 7.3 per cent had a normal appendix.
