Conclusion

The study included six trials of 1008 patients who had gastrointestinal or biliary tract surgery. The surgical site infection rate was reduced by use of the wound protector: relative risk 0.55, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.31 to 0.98, P=0.04. There was a non-significant advantage for the double ring over the single ring wound protector.
