Conclusion

There were 21 randomized trials that studied 8472 patients. Surgical site infection was reduced in patients who had the sponge: risk ratio 0.61, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.49 to 0.84. When studies were graded according to quality, the effect was less pronounced in higher quality studies.
