Conclusion

Some 148 patients with good response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy were randomized. The trial failed to show superiority of local excision because 26/74 patients in that group went on to have completion total mesorectal excision. The composite outcome that included death, recurrence and morbidity at two years was similar in both groups: odds ratio 1.33, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.62 to 2.86, P=0.43.
